The water will carry along patches of oil as it moves through the subsurface rocks. Oil leaving a source rock tends to migrate upward in the direction of lowest pressures. This migration may be deflected or stopped by an impervious rock layer, called an oil trap, or cap. Salt, shale, gypsum, and dense limestones form cap rocks. If an impervious cap is pierced into the oil, the liberated petroleum can gush out under the pressure of the confined gases. Table 2-7 lists the characteristics of oil pools.

High-density fluids are used to prevent blowouts, and weighting materials such as barite may be added to increase the weight of the mud for deep drilling. Water-base muds are the most common, but oil-base muds are used for low-pressure reservoir drilling where a weighted fluid is not needed. Oil-base fluids are also used in drilling through clays, salt, and anhydrite. Rotary drilling may use also air or gas instead of drilling fluid. On its return to the surface, the drilling fluid passes into a tank for sifting.

Each oven is fed with about 15 tons of pulverized coal by an automatic coal car. The doors are hermetically sealed, and distillation begins. The coal becomes pasty and, starting at the walls and proceeding to the center, it cakes into white-hot coke. The firing operation may last 1224 hours, depending on the coal used and the products to be obtained. When distillation is complete, one door of the oven is opened, and the coke bar is pushed out and quenched. In modern coking plants, water quenching has been replaced by dry quenching, where the coke is smothered.
