So physicists are committed to 'believing in' the existence of electrons but remain hesitant to say what electrons 'are' and are always open to new ways of thinking about them that will enhance the reliability of their predictions and render their understanding more comprehensive with respect to the range of phenomena to which it is relevant. The case for such a sceptical and qualified realism, as a defensible philosophy of science, cannot be presented here, but at least it has the merit of being, I believe, the working assumption of practical scientists and will be the stance adopted in these lectures.
